All lives matter. This is a story from long, long ago.
I’ve never shot or shot at any human being. This is the tale of a threatening phone call my mom told me to make in 1969 when I was 13 years old.
I LOVE the police, especially the ones here in Highland Park and Highwood Illinois. I get scared when I see a light top car in my rear view mirror. But when on my front porch with my bride I am reassured to see a marked car cruise by. We always smile and wave.
Every year, mosquitoes infect 400 million people with dengue fever, causing severe headaches and joint pain. Since a 2009 outbreak in Key West, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has spent $1 million a year to try to curb the primary vector: Aedes aegypti. Last July, another mosquito-borne virus reached U.S. shores: chikungunya. Now officials are considering a radical—and highly controversial—approach to control the spread of tropical disease: genetically modified mosquitoes. http://www.popsci.com/mosquitoes-designed-self-destruct.
What can we learn about racism from rodents? Sympathy and Optimism?

It’s not easy being a female athlete. Being feminine and being sporty don’t always go hand-in-hand, and we’re socially conditioned to prioritize one (hint: femininity) over the other. Seriously. There was a push before the London Olympics to force female boxes to wear miniskirts so the audience could more easily tell the men from the women. Because you have just got to be able to tell which athletes are worth watching and which ones aren’t, am I right?
This itself is eye-rollingly stupid, but as technology and medicine improve, we’ve also started enforcing gender conformity on the molecular level.
Indian sprinter Dutee Chand was disqualified days before she was scheduled to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Not for doping or other types of cheating, but because she has excess testosterone in her body. Excess for her sex, that is. Apparently, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) started getting suspicious of Chand when she beat her personal best in the 200-meter earlier this year. She won two gold medals at last month’s Asian Junior Championship, which prompted the SAI to test Chand for “female hyperandrogenism.”
I give virtually no thought to plant sex or gender but a subset of botanists are all over it. I get a bit of the lowdown from research Dr. Pati Vitt.
“I’ve never had anyone fact-check my jokes,” says the Highland Park resident. “It adds an extra degree of difficulty.”
An extra degree of difficulty, however, comes with the territory in Freeman’s new role as artist-in-residence for the Chicago Council on Science & Technology, a regional consortium on science and technology education and policy.
Well here is what we have all secretly been waiting for – a global ranking of Wang sizes. BodyRock is based in Canada, so I guess we will just have to continue to take pride in our Hockey prowess.
Out of the 80 countries they researched, the average penis size is 5.5 inches. South America is the most well hung continent at 6.36 inches. While North Korea, at 3.8 inches, takes home the booby prize.
The White House has appointed the country’s first ever Chief Data Scientist. 8 seconds into this video Obama begins his introduction of Dr. Patil with my new favorite data science joke! Do you have a better one?
