Palestinians & James Brown

In a University of Chicago experiment on prosocial behavior among rats the critters readily worked at non rat-native tasks to free fellow rodents trapped in a cage except when the task seemed too hard (about 25% of the cases). Then the rats succumbed to “learned helplessness” and just gave up. I absolutely understand why, given their experience and media, Palestinians would lose hope that any Israeli government would ever even allow much less live in peace with a their state.  I can totally relate to hopelessness and violence.  In my more excitable youth, during dark days of the civil rights movement I remember singing along with gusto to James Brown: we’d rather die on our feet than keep living on our knees!”
